ANGLING: Didcot duo's massive haul

CATCH TO REMEMBER
LIFELONG friends Alan White and John Kerin, from Didcot, had a five-day fishing trip to the famous River Ebro in Spain they will never forget.
Between them, they caught more than 50 fish, including ten catfish to over 100lb and carp to 31lb.
It was their first trip and the first Wels catfish Alan had ever encountered, although he caught a Mekong catfish of 66lb on a trip to Thailand earlier this year.
He normally fishes for carp on Oxfordshire waters, including Linear, at Stanton Harcourt.
The duo baited up with hailbut pellets, but used a whole squid on the hook, and that proved the key method. Their gear was 60lb braid and stepped up carp rods.
Ten of the cats went over 100lb, with 54-year-old Alan landing the heaviest specimen at 159lb.
John, also 54, captured the second heaviest of the haul at 138lb.
Alan was made redundant when Didcot Power Station closed this year and is certainly making the most of his ‘time off’.
He said: “The fishing was just incredible. I’ve never known anything like it.
“We were fishing from a high bank and when I hooked the big one it almost pulled me in.
“It took me about 20 minutes to land.
“The trip was something we’ve always wanted to do.”
