THE World Championships may be over, but there is still plenty of top athletics action to come this season.

Since the championships in Moscow, the athletics world moved onto Stockholm for the Diamond League.

Hosting the likes of world champions David Oliver (110m hurdles), Zuzana Hejnovà (400m hurdles) and Lashawn Merritt (400m), the event demonstrated the indomitability of many of global stars made in Moscow.

Britain featured little at this meeting with a lot of athletes taking a break to focus on next year’s challenges, or even to focus on the Diamond League finals tonight in Zurich and next Friday in Brussels.

With the calibre of global athletics at a high similar to last year, these meetings should be packed with races to watch and coverage will be on BBC TV.

Triple Moscow world champion Usain Bolt is likely to be the highlight in Zurich tonight when he runs in the 100m alongside Adam Gemili, who recently became only the second Briton to break 20 seconds for 200m.

The Brussels meeting will see Belgian brothers Kévin, Jonathan and Dylan Borlée all competing in the 400m, plus a 5,000m race that could attract Mo Farah.

TALKING of Mo Farah and Moscow, Team GB can look back at 2013 with a sense of pride and many British success stories to add to the annals of athletic history.

Farah, Tiffany Porter and the women’s 4x400m and 4x100m relay teams bringing home silverware were the highlights of the closing stages.

The team that went to Moscow seemed to lack some household names and faces, but as the championships progressed they pulled out a string of places in finals and medals.

Notably William Sharman (110mh), Chris O’Hare (1500m), Andrew Osagie (800m), James Dasaolu (100m), Gemili (200m) and Oxfordshire’s Hannah England (1500m) all produced performances that saw them feature in the finals.

Most of these guys have suffered injuries and setbacks over the year, so to see them competing at the global level is personally reassuring for next year’s Commonwealth Games.
