Oxford City & County Ladies pipped Didcot 71-68 to claim a place in the National Top Club quarter-finals at Royal Leamington Spa on Saturday, September 14.
City & County, who were national champions in 2008, suffered defeats in the singles and pairs, but wins in the triples and fours saw them edge through.
In the singles, Myra Lewis battled to stay in touch with Berkshire singles finalist Jane Porter, before losing 21-16.
The fours saw City & County’s Margaret Stacey, Maggie Alderson, Donna Knight and Katherine Hawes also involved in a tight encounter against Didcot skip Joyce Evans, before breaking away to claim a 24-18 victory.
City & County’s Carol Gaskins and Carol Penson trailed Sally Gilbert and Lyn Orlando by 11 shots after 20 ends in the pairs.
But a precious four shots on the last end saw them reduce the deficit to 22-15 to give City & County the chance of winning the triples by enough shots to claim overall victory.
Sue Mayo, Rosemary Phelps and Jeanette Berry held only a three-shot advantage against Jane Murphy’s trio after 14 ends.
But City & County then racked up seven unanswered shots to move four ahead overall with one end to go.
Murphy could only pull one back, leaving City & County to look forward to the national quarter-finals.
