JOHNNY Mullins says his new nickname is ‘The Magnet’ after the defender struck another crucial goal for Oxford United.
After netting the winner in the U’s previous home game against Bury, he buried a 96th-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw against Wycombe Wanderers.
It got the league leaders out of jail, after a brace from former U’s forward Dean Morgan had cancelled out Danny Rose’s free-kick and put the ten-man visitors on course for all three points.
Mullins was thrilled to again be in the right place at the right time, which has earned him a new title.
“I think it’s ‘The Magnet’, because it keeps falling to me in the box – and long may it continue,” he said.
“Two goals so far isn’t bad and hopefully I can get a few more.
“I don’t normally set myself targets, but having scored six last season I want to try and beat that.
“Sometimes you have little purple patches where things go in and drop to you. “While that’s happening I’ll keep trying and I’m not going to complain.”
Remarkably, the centre back had no idea just how late in the game his equaliser had arrived.
He said: “I wasn’t aware, I was told to push on, but I still thought there were ten minutes to go. “Thankfully, when it dropped to me, I managed to hit it sweetly.
“It was a major relief to get a point, we dug in and it was a horrible game. “They made it difficult, but we’re still undefeated.
“I would have taken a 1-0 scrappy win with someone else scoring, but you have to take any result as it comes.”
Although the equaliser came in the dying seconds, the summer signing from Rotherham United always felt the home side were capable of salvaging something from the game.
He said: “With the quality players we have got from all parts of the pitch it only takes a moment of brilliance.
“Someone can do something or you might get a fortunate bounce in the box, we never gave up and I think that’s a real quality of this team that it will not happen.
“We will keep fighting from the first minute to the 97th and hopefully you’ll get your just rewards in the end.”
