11:00am Friday 23rd August 2013 in Sport
Oxfordshire rowers will be out in force as Great Britain go for gold at the world championships in Chungju, South Korea, starting on Sunday.
The men’s eight has eight Olympic medallists on board.
They include London 2012 champions Andy Triggs Hodge, who lives in Oxford, together with Alex Gregory and Pete Reed, from the Leander club at Henley.
Dan Ritchie, Tom Ransley, Will Satch and cox Phelan Hill are other Leander members in the crew.
They won gold at their home World Cup regatta in Eton Dorney before finishing fourth in Lucerne.
Former Oxford Brookes duo Richard and Peter Chambers have moved to sculling this season, and will look to build on their bronze medal in the lightweight double in Lucerne.
Two more Brookes men – Matthew Tarrant and Scott Durant – are in the four, with Leander’s Alan Sinclair.
Matt Langridge, also from Leander, teams up with Bill Lucas in the double scull, while his clubmates, Charles Cousins and Peter Lambert are in the quadruple scull.
Three more Leander members, William Fletcher, Jonathan Clegg and Chris Bartley, feature in the lightweight four.
Leander’s Jamie Kirkwood goes it alone in the single scull.
Frances Houghton, from Wheatley, is paired up once again with Leander clubmate Vicky Meyer-Laker in the women’s double scull after winning medals in two of the 2013 World Cup regattas.
GB will field the same women’s eight that came fourth in a record-breaking final in Lucerne.
Oxford duo Katie Greves and Olivia Carnegie-Brown feature, alongside Leander members Louisa Reeve and cox Zoe de Toledo.
Kathryn Twyman, from Oxford and a member at Wallingford, is in the lightweight double scull with Imogen Walsh.
Leander’s Polly Swann has enjoyed a remarkable run of success in her first international season after teaming up with Helen Glover in the women’s pair.
The duo are unbeaten together, winning three World Cup golds this year, and will be chasing further success.
Victoria Thornley goes in the single scull, while Leander clubmates Rosamund Bradbury and Monica Relph are in the quadruple scull.
In the paralympic competition, Leander duo Pamela Relph and cox Oliver James are in the coxed four with Henley RC’s Oliver Hester.
