ANGLING: Johnson leads way way as bream comes top

Dave Johnson, of Talismen, won the fifth round of the Oxford Summer League, fished by six teams of six anglers on the Medley stretch of the Thames.
With very little flow, but a friendly wind, the roach were expected to show in numbers.
But it was bream and skimmers that provided the top weights.
Johnson, drawn on the fallen tree at the top of the poplars and had four big bream and a few perch on the pole and worm over groundbait and chop worm for a winning total of 20lb 8oz.
He was followed by Tom and Tony Hobbs, of Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths, who came second and third respectively.
Tom had a number of skimmers on pole and maggot over groundbait for 16.4.0, while Tony had the top roach from the top end of medley for 14.12.0.
In the team event, Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths Blue won with 28 points, just one ahead of their Red Team, with Turners third on 25.
League standings: Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths Blue 142pts, Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths Red 139, Turners 135.
The Pete Jackson Memorial Match, held on the Thames at Sandford, was won by Pete Clarke for the second time in three years.
It was a sell-out turnout of 20 anglers with all peg fees – a total of £80 – being donated to the British Heart Foundation Charity.
Clarke recorded 11.14.0, mainly small roach on the pole, for top spot.
Alan Gee (Acorn Angling) was second with 8.6.0 of roach and perch on the stick-float, while Richard Norris (Drennan) came third with 7.10.0 of roach and perch on the pole.
Keith Harvey finished on top in Kidlington AS’s Bert Alder Cup fourth points match away to Clanfield.
Harvey took 9.7.0 of mainly roach on waggler fished over hemp.
Henry Clarke was second with 8.9.0 of roach on hemp & tares, fished on the pole, while Jason Bean was third with a mixed bag of 7l.10.0.

Sutton Courtenay AC fished Phil’s Fiddle at Phil’s Lake, but it did not attract many fish. Of the nine anglers, four did not weigh in. The winner was Bob Gosbee with 1.6.6.

Mick Merry was an easy winner of the Tackley Estate AC’s match on the River Cherwell.
Merry caught 6.1.0 of roach and chub on pole with punched bread. John Spencer was second with 2.15.0 of perch om legered worm, just pipping Tim Wray, who had 2.10.8 of roach and perch.
l TOM Rice set a Red Kite Lake record at Oakfield Fishery with a total of 203.4.0 Rice did not let the lack of a landing net handle for the first two hours hamper his progress.
Fishing maggot in green swimstim on the method feeder, he took mainly large carp from the middle of the lake on peg 25.
There was another midweek win for the in-form Roy Makins from peg 20 on Swallow Lake, taking quality skimmers for a total of 177.15.0.
