THREE Oxfordshire professionals will seek a place in The Open today when they compete in local final qualifying.
Frilford Heath’s Tom Fleming, Chipping Norton’s Danny Phillips and Didcot’s Clive Bowler, who is based at Sonning, are vying for a Muirfield spot.
Fleming and Bowler tee up at North Berwick, while Phillips plays at Dunbar.
In order to make the season’s third major, they must finish in the top three at their courses.
Competition is over 36 holes, with 288 players in action.
- WITNEY Lakes’ new pairing of Matt Gatland and Jack Lambourne earned an emphatic 5&3 victory as their side saw off Ellesborough 2-1 in Section 2 of the Shaw Gibbs Oxfordshire Foursomes League.
Gatland and Lanbourne saw off Cliff Pearce and Bryan Godwin, while Ross Steeples and Scott Saunders bagged Witney’s other point.
- FRILFORD Heath’s DOME team won Five Star Events’ Phil Garner Memorial Trophy at Burford.
The side, captained by Paul Smith, scored 125 points, with David Woodhead's Handelsbanben second on 122 and Old but Bold, from Cotswold Hills, third on 121.
Mark Smith, Collyn Fell, Mike Tebbott and Henry Chopping won nearest the pin prizes.
