Sir David Attenborough will join a festival raising awareness of the dangers of plastic pollution.

EcoTales aims to educate people on environmental issues and will host the festival at the Orleans House Gallery, Twickenham, on Sunday, May 5.

The event will feature a pedal-powered cinema, a mini safari and a fashion show for sea urchins.

Richmond based EcoTales has been working closely with schoolchildren and the festival will showcase a giant albatross made from plastic bottles, created by pupils at Stanley School.

Plastic debris kills about 1m sea creatures every year as they pollute 40 per cent of the world’s oceans.

North Kingston MP Zac Goldsmith is pleased that the project has chosen to educate the young on such an issue.

He said: “We have treated the Earth and particularly the seas as a giant dustbin for decades now, and have done enormous harm. It’s wonderful that this project has captured the imagination of young people.”

The festival will also include a competition for short film entries based on the environment.

The judging panel includes celebrity wildlife expert Michaela Strachan, who said: “Plastic pollution is a real problem. The EcoTales project is a great way for children to learn and be a part of the solution.”
