NEWPORT County kept up their impressive recent form to beat Alfreton 2-0 amid appalling conditions at Rodney Parade.
A first half strike from Christian Jolley and Byron Anthony's second half header made it nine points from nine in a week for the Exiles as leaders Mansfield suffered a shock defeat at Braintree to for a time keep County in title contention.
However, County's title hopes were ended when Kidderminster beat Wrexham 2-1 at the Racecourse in the day's late kick-off.
The Exiles deserved victory over a spirited Alfreton and certainly strengthened their grip on third spot with a maximum of two points needed to guarantee home advantage in the play-offs.
