FOOTBALL: Didcot are humbled

Didcot Town were left to rue a lack of finishing power as they went down to a heavy defeat against their ten-man opponents on Saturday.

Tom Wray had put Didcot ahead, only for Poole to hit back to go top of the Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West table and make it four defeats in a row for the visitors.

Missing a number of key players, Didcot gave keeper Craig Griffiths his debut.

The game was delayed early on when Poole’s Sam Clarke was taken to hospital with a serious head injury.

Poole were still re-organising their defence when Didcot took the lead. An in-swinging free-kick from Morgan Williams was deflected past keeper Nick Hutchings from close range by Wray.

The hosts levelled when Steve Devlin’s corner was fumbled by Griffiths and the ball crept over the goalline. Michael Walker then put Poole ahead.

Early in the second half, Poole had Marvin Brooks sent off for a second yellow card.

That made little difference as substitute Lam-in Dibba found Warren Byerley who made it 3-1.

Williams, twice, Mark Janes and Joel Meade all had chances to get back into it, but failed to hit the target or were denied by Hutchings.

And it was all over for Didcot when Jacob Cane scored Poole’s fourth goal 11 minutes from time.
