FOOTBALL: Agony for Banbury

A late goal from Ed Palmer denied Banbury United a share of the spoils at Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division play-off chasers on Saturday.

With three minutes left, it looked as though a superb performance from keeper Warren Carter had been enough to earn Edwin Stein’s side a point, only for Palmer’s goal to win it for the Terras. Banbury had the better of the forgettable first half, though neither side failed to create a worthwhile opportunity against some resolute defending.

After the break, the game opened up and it was Banbury who went the closest to breaking the deadlock on 53 minutes when Albi Skendi headed a right-wing corner from Ben Polk over the bar.

However, the home side started to put together some moves of their own, with Carter making a couple of superb saves. He first kept out a Sam Poole effort before making an even better stop when he dived full length to tip a goalbound shot low to his right from Scott Walker away for a corner.

It seemed as if Banbury would hold on for a point. But three minutes from time, Palmer fastened onto a defensive clearance before smashing it past Carter into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

Banbury tried their best to salvage a point, but Weymouth held on.
