Oxfordshire's rivers are at last back to their best after the rain and snow, with some surprise carp figuring prominently in last weekend’s matches.

The carp, normally associated more with commercials and stillwaters, came in Marston AC FTB’s final match of the season on the Cherwell.

Third-placed Antony Tompkins banked one of 9lb exactly and lost another at the net, while Tim Ivory had a 5lb 8oz carp and also lost another bigger fish that just kept going upstream.

Two other anglers reported losing big fish that were almost certainly carp.

The match itself was won by Barry Lewis with four good bream on the feeder and bread for 16.10.0.

Runner-up Ron Hillier captured five bream for 15.15.0, also on bread, all caught on the pole.

Marston hold their annual meeting on Monday at the Victoria Arms, Marston (8pm). All members welcome.

A nice chub of 5.8.0 won Charlbury AC’s open on their stretch of the Evenlode, which was in fine condition.

Steve Arthurs, pegged below Charlbury Station, fished stick float and maggot to tempt his big chub, plus some smaller fish, for a winning 9.11.0.

Runner-up Ben Cox was pegged below Cornbury Bridge and weighed in 3.12.0 of bits, with his dad, Colin, coming third with a 3.6.0 chub and two ounces of bits from above the station.

Charlbury are holding their final open of the season tomorrow. Details from Mark Taylor on 07504 973891.

Chub also featured in Sutton Courtenay AC’s Hewer Challenge Cup at Appleford Reach.

A cold day and clear Thames made it tough going for the five anglers, three of whom failed to bother the scalesman.

Ian Higgins had a 3.15.0 chub on bread to take the silverware, pipping Bob Gosbee by a couple of ounces.

Tackley Estates AC were back on the Cherwell at Northbrook where six fished.

Mick Merry had a 2.13.0 chub on legered bread for top spot, followed by Tim Wray with another chub of 2.2.0.

Stephen Malone was third with a rare trout of ten ounces on maggot.

Littlemore’s Thames Shield at Medley was their first match on the river since October and they still decided to move it from the Channel, which was a bit too pacy.

River expert Gerald Perks topped the 14-strong field with three bream on groundbait feeder with caster for 8.13.0.

Alan Campbell had two chub, one going 6lb, on stick float with bread for 8.2.0 for second, followed by Steve Pitson with two bream on groundbait feeder for 4.10.0. Campbell claimed the Points Shield.
