RACING: Turnell on the mend

Trainer Andy Turnell is reported to be on the road to recovery after suffering a stroke.

Turnell, who saddled Maori Venture to win the Grand National in 1987 while based at East Hendred, near Wantage, was taken ill at his stables at Broad Hinton in North Wiltshire last month.

Jockey Nick Scholfield, who has visited the trainer in Swindon’s Great Western Hospital, said: “He did have a stroke, but he is improving.

“He’s fine mentally, he’s in good spirits and keeping the nurses well entertained.

“He’s on the mend and making good improvement.”
