HOCKEY: Oxford Hawks ladies stun title contenders
11:00am Tuesday 5th March 2013 in Sport
Oxford Hawks ladies put a spoke in St Albans’ hopes of taking the Investec Conference East title with a 2-0 victory at Banbury Road North.
Abi Flory created the opening goal with a brilliant turn on the halfway line, followed by a strong drive and pinpoint cross which was turned in by Katie Hewitt.
In the second half, Hawks extended their lead with a breakaway goal as Bex Oakes and Lex Thomas set up Becky Odlin.
St Albans won a number of penalty corners, but fine defending from full backs Takara Haines and Kirsty Chapman kept them out.
Oxford were outgunned 4-1 at home by table-toppers Tulse Hill & Dulwich in Division 2 of the South Clubs League, but hit back the next day to defeat Wycombe 4-2.
Rachael Lammey was on the mark in both games, pulling one back to make it 2-1 against unbeaten Dulwich, who then added two more goals. Kim Haynes, Hayley Sawyer and Naomi Gay also found the net against Wycombe, who were trailing 2-0 at the break.
Wycombe levelled with two goals in quick succession, but Oxford added two more of their own to wrap it up.
Witney proved too strong for promotion-chasing Chiswick, beating them 2-1 South Division 3A.
Goals from Denise Shaw and Izzie Hayes gave the home side the early advantage.
Some good stops from Witney’s player-of-the-match Sam Ayres kept Chiswick out until the 57th minute and they held on to take all three points.
