SNOOKER: Witney wonders lift cup

JUSTIN Buckingham led from the front as Witney G lifted the Gentworks Oxford & District League’s Simonds Cup after a shock success.
Buckingham racked up more than 100 points in the opening frame of the night as his team, who play in Division 1, recorded a 4-1 victory over Premier Division leaders Littlemore Royal British Legion C in the final.
Although Matthew Challen levelled for Littlemore with a 71-34 win over Gavin Wright, it was to be their last success of the night.
Ben Calcutt defeated Jason Buck 83-51, before further wins for Buckingham and Wright sealed Witney’s cup triumph.
Eynsham B beat Cowley Conservative Club C 4-1 to claim the Sherlock Cup – a competition for teams in Division 3 and 4.
Roger Tomlin won the opening frame of the night to put Cowley in front, but that was as good as it got.
John Ayres, twice, Kevin Truby and Lee Parsons won the next four frames as the Division 3 outfit proved too strong for their opponents, who play in a league lower.
In league action, Abingdon Conservative Club A moved level on points with Littlemore RBL C after a 4-2 win over Riley C.
Littlemore, however, have a game in hand on their rivals.
The top two teams in Division 2, Green Road A and Thame A, both enjoyed 5-1 victories.
