OXFORD City Stars made it seven Division 2 South wins in a row with an impressive 6-3 victory at Wightlink Tigers.

The red-hot team continued their superb run with a hard-working success, which saw them leapfrog their opponents into second place in the table, just four points behind the leaders with four games in hand.

There was a dramatic start to the match with Tigers having a good opportunity to take the lead after just five seconds.

They failed, however, and it was Stars who looked the more likely side to go ahead, but they were denied when Alan Green’s effort hit a post.

Against the run of play, Wightlink went 1-0 up when Drew Campbell fired home from the top of the circle.

Stars again hit the upright, this time through Josh Oliver, but deservedly drew level when Nick Oliver powered home a shot.

Dax Hedges then put the visitors ahead with a shot through keeper Elliott Powell’s legs, before Oxford hit the woodwork for the third time in the opening period when a Jack Maisey effort pinged off the crossbar.

After both sides picked up a number of penalties, it was the Tigers who were able to take advantage, Lewis Tribble lashing home to level the scores.

But Stars wasted little time in hitting back, making the most of an extra man to restore their advantage through Sam Broughton following a fine team move.

Wightlink, however, made it 3-3 in controversial circumstances after a decision went against Stars and Campbell made the most of an overlap to equalise.

As time ran out in the second period, Josh Oliver set off on a mazy run and after beating three players, fired in for the goal of the night.

Stars were quickly out the blocks at the start of the final period and caught the hosts off-guard, Maisey firing home to put them 5-3 ahead.

Green then went through and found the net to seal an impressive victory and keep up Stars’ pursuit of the top spot.
