Phil MacKenzie says London Welsh have every reason to be confident as they face the pressure of a relegation battle.

The 25-year-old Canadian international will start on the right wing when Welsh visit Exeter Chiefs in the Aviva Premiership today.

And although the Exiles’ odds of staying up lengthened after losing at home to Sale last time out, MacKenzie says the players retain their belief. “

Every game we are going to be playing in the next ten weeks we can win,” said MacKenzie.

“We have a squad that is fully capable of beating anyone in this league. “We are a confident squad. We know if we focus on ourselves, then we will get the wins we need.”

Losing 26-25 at home to Sale was clearly a big blow, but MacKenzie feels there is no need to panic.

“A few things didn’t go our way, but there was a lot of good about the performance,” he said.

“Worcester are only four points ahead of us. “If we focus on our own game, we have a good chance of catching them.

Playing Exeter will bring back memories of Welsh’s maiden Premiership win – a pulsating 25-24 home success over the Chiefs back in September.

MacKenzie said: “I will always remember that game and I think all the guys who played in it will as well.

“We can think back to that day and draw inspiration from it, but we are much improved since then.

“We are a completely different side to where we were when we played that game.”

MacKenzie scored his third Premiership try for Welsh in the Sale defeat, but has yet to cross the whitewash in a top-flight victory.

He said: “It is not something I had thought much about, but I definitely would love to do it. “Hopefully, I can score this weekend and we can end up getting the win as well.”
