HOCKEY: Four-goal Oxford Hawks in season's best
11:00am Tuesday 19th February 2013 in Sport
Oxford Hawks continued their fine run of form in Women's Conference East with a 4-0 victory over Chelmsford – their biggest of the season. A penalty corner buried by Takara Haines opened the scoring for the home side and they doubled their lead when Haines was fouled and Kirsty Chapman made it 2-0.
Player-of-the-match Abi Flory’s fine individual goal saw Hawks in command at the break, and Kathryn Poulter’s second-half effort made sure Hawks stayed in the top half of the table.
Oxford pipped Brighton & Hove 4-3 in South Clubs League Division 2.
Brighton led 2-0 at half-time, but Oxford came out with all guns blazing as two Catherine Reaney goals put them level.
A great move saw captain Kim Haynes set up Caro Harris for Oxford’s third, only for Brighton to force an equaliser. Oxford were not to be denied, however, and player-of-the-match Hayley Sawyer got a deft touch to a Harris cross for the winner.
Oxford 2nd picked up four points from their two Divison 3A fixtures.
A Lyn Cockshott hat-trick, plus a goal from Bev Cousins, secured a 4-2 win at Southgate 2nd on Saturday, followed by a 3-3 draw at Milton Keynes the next day.
Cockshott (2) and Claire Hooper were on the mark.
Witney took an important step towards securing their place in Division 3A for another season with wins over both Sonning and Southgate 2nd over the weekend. A sound team performance against Sonning was rewarded with goals from Hayley Dobson and Lucy Reading, securing a 2-0 victory. Dobson was also on the mark against Southgate, along with Katie Gatt, Izzie Hayes and Ellie Norton as a strong defensive display and some good goalkeeping from Sam Ayres ensured a 4-0 success.
Bicester saw off Wycombe 2nd 2-0 in Trysports Division 2.
Gina Girvan put them ahead in the first half, and Kath Crook’s powerful strike wrapped it up.
Wychwood came back from 4-0 down to make it 4-3 before succumbing 5-3 to Gerrards Cross. Captain Jo Trask, Jane Goodman and Catherine Forteath got the goals.
