FOOTBALL: Banbury humbled

Banbury United slipped to a 4-2 home defeat against Gosport Borough in the Premier Division at Spencer Stadium on Saturday.

The home side’s Chris Lait was denied by Nathan Ashmore in the Gosport goal, before the visitors went ahead through a Rory Williams penalty after Joseph N’Guessan fouled Daniel Woodward.

Five minutes later, Aaron Cook headed in Gosport’s second.

Banbury clawed a goal back just before the break when Lait’s pass found Nabil Sharif, who found the corner of the net from an acute angle.

However, Banbury’s hopes of a revival ended shortly after the break when Williams made it 3-1 and five minutes later, completed his treble with a strike into the top corner giving Carter no chance.

Scott Bridges’s penalty, cut Gosport’s lead, but it was too late.

Banbury Utd: Carter, Cray, Martin, Ashton, Blossom, Sc Bridges, Lait (Plowright 89), Skendi, Sharif (Hopkins 62), Isaac, N’Guessan (Talabi 62). Subs not used: R Plowright, Agyeman-Prempeh.

Attendance: 223.
