ANGLING: Real drama on the riverbank

Angling is normally a fairly peaceful pastime, but occasionally it has its dramatic moments.

Such was the case in two matches at the weekend.

Two hours were remaining in Marston FTB AC’s Northway Cup on the Cherwell in the University Parks when the anglers were told by police that they were within a 200m exclusion zone and would have to move to another stretch or pack up completely.

With the river rising fast and the fact that only one angler had caught, the decision was made to shorten the match.

Steve Tomkins was declared the winner with two bream for 6lb 4oz. He caught them on groundbait feeder and red maggot.

It was later discovered the police intervention was to deal with a bomb scare.

Meanwhile, there was different drama in the Tackley Estates AC match on the Oxford Canal at the Rock of Gibraltar when one of the competitors, Monty Finnemore, suffered a minor heart attack.

He underwent an operation and was reported in the week to be on the mend.

Finnemore works at Predator Tackle in Kidlington and is well known for his pike- fishing exploits.

Tim Wray took the honours with 5.5.0 of bream on legered worm, with Geoff Broom using the same method for 4.14.0 and second.

John Spencer was third with 1.4.0 of perch, while the Roach Cup went to Stephen Malone.

Sutton Courtenay AC fished the first leg of the Markertow Shield on the Otneys stretch of the Thames.

Mario Granito took the honours with 7.1.0 of bream, followed by Enzo Granito with 2.14.0 and David Hicks (1.0.0).
