OXFORD’S Gus Jones proved a late call-up when England Under 20s named their squad for tomorrow’s Six Nations opener against Scotland at Plymouth (5.45).

The 18-year-old Oxford University flanker had not expected to feature at all for England this season so he could focus on his studies, but bagged a replacement spot when the side was announced yesterday.

“I got a call at the weekend,” said last year’s England Under 18 captain and Wasps academy man Jones, who joined up with the squad this week.

“They lost a couple of back-row players from the original squad and Rob Hunter, the coach, thought it would be good to give me the experience.

“I was delighted to get the chance. I have watched this match for the last few years hoping I may get a chance to play in it.”

There was, however, no place in the final 23 for Leicester wing/centre Henry Purdy, from Milton-under-Wychwood.
