ANGLING: Champs again - that's Drennan

First published in Sport

Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths have retained their Angling Trust Oxford Winter League crown for another year after finishing in style last weekend.

Their anglers occupied the first two places in the final round fished by five teams of eight on the Kennet & Avon Canal at Avington, seeing off Sensa A4 and FM Isis to take the title.

The milder weather saw a lot more roach showing, but it was two big perch that helped Paul Glenfield to victory with 8lbs 4oz. They were caught on lobworm and supplemented by a net of roach on bloodworm.

Drennan teammate Carl Eland had one decent perch and roach on bloodworm over joker for a second-placed 7.14.0, followed by Henry Golas (Fox match Isis) with 7.7.0 of roach on a mixture of baits.

Teams on day: 1 Drennan Banbury Gun-smiths 30, 2 FM Isis 28, 3 Sensas A4 22.

Final league placings: 1 Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths 10, 2 Sensas A4 13, 3 FM Isis 14.

Dorchester AS’s Christmas Match was a rover, which meant the 12 anglers could choose to fish the Thames or the Thame. In the end, neither river produced the goods.

Just 14 ounces, made up of a skimmer and a roach, was enough for Mick Marriott to take the silverware from the Thames at Meadside, pipping Ian Fisher with 0.12.0 of chublets from the same venue. He also lost a bigger chub that would have won the event.

Dave Head fished the Thame and was third with 0.3.8, while it proved a short match for Lawrence Budd, who fell headlong into the Thame and decided to get into the warm at home.

Sutton Courtenay AC’s Christmas Match took place on Culham Cut as the main river was too dangerous to fish.

This one also proved a grueller, with only three of the 15 anglers weighing in.

Marston AC FTB are running a ‘New Year’ raffle with tickets available from FTB tackle shop in Northway. The draw is on January 5.
