Altaf Ali produced a break of 41 to help Riley C to a thrilling 4-3 victory at Cowley Conservative Club A in the second round of the Gent-works Oxford & District League’s Colin Cutler Memorial Trophy.

Division 3 side Cowley, who received a 16-point start in each frame of what used to be called the Buildbase Cup, ran their Division 1 opponents mighty close.

Ali’s big break came in a 97-17 success over Chick Whealey, and he followed that up with a 78-40 win in his second frame.

Mark Bayliss won twice for Cowley against Antony Stopp.

But it was Stopp’s 59-33 win over Malcolm Grieveson in the decider which put Riley through.

In an another exciting match, Premier Division side Abingdon RBL only scraped home 4-3 against Division 1 hosts Eynsham A.

The home side, receiving 16 points per frame, were given a great start after Richard Partlett won 2-0 against Kevin Higgs.

But it was Robbie Adock’s three wins, without conceding a single point – he won 75-16, 91-16, 65-16 – that edged Abingdon RBL to victory.

House Club A, from Division 4, made the most of their eight-point handicap to defeat Division 3 visitors Witney C 4-1.

Brian Field won twice for the victorious hosts.
