Abingdon Utd 0

Poole Tn 4

(Byerley 5, Preston 8, 79, Howes 31)

Abingdon United were caught cold as they crashed to defeat against high-flying Poole Town in Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West at Northcourt Road.

Warren Byerley sidefooted home a right-wing cross to give the visitors a fifth-minute lead.

And three minutes later, Carl Preston broke away to fire past James Foster.

United struggled to get into the game, although Carl Self forced keeper Nick Hutchings to palm away his drive, before the ball was hooked away.

Abingdon went further behind in the 31st minute as Luke Burridge ran on to a ball over the home defence and crossed for Glenn Howes to smash it home.

Abingdon reorganised at half-time, and Sam Tucker had a shot deflected a foot wide, before Hutchings tipped Matty Biddle’s chip over the bar.

Luke Carnell headed Self’s free-kick straight into the arms of Hutchings, who then denied Aaron Woodley when he nipped in on a weak back header.

But Abingdon’s fate was sealed by an unlucky fourth goal in the 79th minute.

Preston let fly from 20 yards and as Foster dived to cover the ball, it hit a defender on the back and deflected into the opposite side of the goal giving the keeper no chance.

And it could have been worse for Abingdon as Sam Clarke went close with a low drive past the far post.
