SCHOOL RUGBY: Abingdon are top of the class
10:10am Saturday 8th December 2012 in Sport
ABINGDON School came from behind to capture the Oxfordshire Under 19 Cup with a hard-earned 20-13 victory away to holders Cokethorpe.
And by becoming champions, Abingdon scuppered the hosts’ bid to make it five titles in a row.
Fielding their second team, Abingdon found themselves 10-0 down after five minutes to unconverted tries from centre Harry Stevens and winger Alex Haywood.
The fightback started immediately as a Steve Moran try, followed by a Rory Garrett penalty, levelled the scores.
The Abingdon forwards dictated the play and this allowed them to secure a 13-10 half-time lead thanks to a Garrett penalty.
Cokethorpe turned up the pressure in the second half, but only had a Stevens penalty to show for their efforts.
The match was decided in Abingdon’s favour when Richard Knight seized on a loose ball to run in from halfway to score a try, which was converted.
The other two Oxfordshire titles were both won by Bloxham School, near Banbury.
In the Under 15 final, Bloxham triumphed 32-7 away to previously-unbeaten Burford, who were attempting to make it a hat-trick of titles.
Bloxham were 20-0 up at half-time thanks to tries from Finn Dunleavy and Jake Dew, both of which were converted by Jack Briggs, who also put over two penalties Two more tries in the second half from Dew and Will Adams stretched the lead to 32 points before Burford got a consolation try.
In the Under 14 final, Bloxham won 20-7 at home to Lord Williams, Thame. After going behind, Bloxham hit back to take victory thanks to tries from Will Brown (2), James Packe and Ollie Kilgannon.
The finals were moved from Chipping Norton RFC due to waterlogged pitches.
