Toby Nowell gives Abingdon United the lead against Taunton Town

First published in Sport

Abingdon United got back to winning ways with a deserved victory over Taunton at Northcourt Road in Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West on Saturday.

Three first-half goals were enough to give Richie Bourne’s side victory, which was ensured by a top display from keeper James Foster.

Abingdon had the visitors on the back foot from the off and took the lead when Toby Nowell robbed a defender and raced away to fire past Connor Sidley-Adams in the Taunton goal. After Taunton’s Jamie Short was denied a penalty, Abingdon doubled the advantage when a Kevin Halliday corner was headed home by Chris Baker at the far post.

Taunton were still in the game and Rodney Marsh smashed in a volley from ten yards, but Foster made a super stop to preseve the lead.

A minute before half-time, Abingdon made it 3-0 when Sam Tucker stooped to nod the ball past the stranded visiting keeper from Nowell’s cross.

Taunton turned up the pressure after the break, but Foster was in fine form, denying Simon Ingrams, James Blake and Craig Herrod with fine saves.

But the damage had been done by that first-half blitz and Abingdon saw the game out for an impressive three points.

Abingdon Utd: Foster, Baker, Crudup, Carnell, Halliday, Tucker (Evans 75), Biddle, Melledew (Riccio 75), Woodley (Whitehead 25), Nowell, Young. Subs not used: Bourne, Self.

Attendance: 54.
