MOTORSPORT: Walkinshaw's final flourish
10:00am Saturday 27th October 2012 in Sport
Chipping Norton’s Fergus Walkinshaw signed off his Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup season with an impressive charge to finish fifth in the finale at Brands Hatch.
Starting from tenth on the grid, the Century Motorsport driver demonstrated his prowess in wet weather by surging through the field.
Victory went to Tom Sharp, but it was third-placed Carl Breeze who claimed the title, with Walkinshaw ending the campaign in eighth spot.
Walkinshaw had opened the weekend with a sixth place as the honours went to Mark Davies, who also took race two with Walkinshaw tenth after being hit by Tom Ingram.
Final standings (top ten): 1 C Breeze 719pts, 2 T Sharp 714, 3 T Ingram 651, 4 A Richardson 469, 5 C White 402, 6 H Abbott 386, 7 J Hill 375, 8 F Walkinshaw 322, 9 M Hoggarth 270, 10 J Orton 253.
BANBURY driver Michael Meadows, who was crowned the Porsche Carrera Cup GB champion in the last round at Silverstone, helped Redline Racing secure the team title at Brands Hatch.
Meadows, from Shutford, finished 11th and seventh in the final two races as the wins went to Jonas Gelzinis and Sam Tordoff.
And with the points scored by their other car, driven by Glynn Geddie and then James Sutton this season, it gave the Cleveland-based team their fifth title in ten years.
Final standings (top ten): 1 M Meadows 320pts, 2 B Barker 282, 3 S Tordoff 274, 4 J Gelzinis 259, 5 R Butcher 254, 6 D Lloyd 202, 7 R Plant 196, 8 A Al Harty 143, 9 O Mortimer 108, 10 G Geddie 105.
