SWIMMING: Magical Murphys are best in land

Abingdon Vale brothers Alex and David Murphy are both ranked the UK’s No 1 for 100m breaststroke in their age groups after wins in the British Gas National County Team Championships at Sheffield.

The brothers helped Oxfordshire and North Bucks consolidate their position in Division 1.

Alex Murphy, 17, won the 100m breaststroke by breaking his own open O&NB county record with a time of 1min 1.73secs, while David, 13, took the 12-13 year 100m breastroke in a personal best of 1.10.04.

Vale’s Niall O’Leary, 16, and Alex Murphy also helped the O&NB 16/17 medley relay team storm to a convincing win.

There were personal bests for O’Leary and his clubmates Shannon Motha, 13, Caitlin Wheatley, 15, and Joseph Law 13.
