County opposition picks cabinet

Oxfordshire County Council’s biggest opposition party has picked its shadow cabinet.

In last month’s elections, the Liberal Democrats won 10 of the council’s 74 seats.

Grove and Wantage councillor Zoe Patrick has been re-elected as the party’s group leader. Summertown and Wolvercote councillor Jean Fooks remains deputy leader and will also be the party’s spokesman on economic development issues.

Alan Armitage is shadow cabinet member for finance and property, Jenny Hannaby for adult services, Janet Godden for children, young people and families, David Turner for transport, Anne Purse for growth and infrastructure, Mohammed Altaf-Khan for schools improvement, and John Goddard for safer and stronger communities.

Ms Patrick said: “We have a wealth of experience between us, and we’re all keen to get on with the job.”

Ms Fooks added: “We will be making sure we hold the executive to account on the issues that affect people in Oxfordshire.

“In my new role, which includes economic development, I will particularly be concentrating on how the council can help people in these difficult times.”

The Conservatives are the ruling party at County Hall, after winning 52 seats in the elections on June 4.

The Labour Party holds nine seats and the Greens two, while Wallingford’s Lynda Atkins is the lone independent.
