OXFORD United proved a class above Scottish Division 1 side Morton, running out 3-0 winners of their pre-season friendly.

Goals from Jack Midson, Sam Deering and James Constable gave Chris Wilder's side a comfortable victory in the first match of their pre-season tour to Scotland.

United took a look at Rhys Day, who is out of contract at Aldershot.

Day partnered Mark Creighton at the heart of the U's defence, with Luke Foster playing at right back with Damian Batt and Adam Chapman missing.

Matt Green partnered Jack Midson in attack, with James Constable on the bench.

Ryan Clarke started in goal for the first time.

orton had more of the ball in the opening five minutes, but Oxford gradually found their feet and started to create some good openings.

Their first chance of the game came from a Foster throw that was flicked on by Midson.

Green latched onto the ball six yards out, but with his back to goal decided to feed Simon Clist, whose effort was blocked for a corner.

Sandwith was then dispossed by Stevie Masterton, but a crunching tackle from Creighton soon stopped him in his tracks.

Green then caught Stewart Greacen napping, and fed Midson. He in turn played in Marcus Kelly down the left flank, but his cross-cum-shot never troubled Kevin Cuthbert in the Morton goal and went out for a throw-in.

A super bit of quick-thinking from Green then almost brought him a goal.

Clist played a corner to the former Torquay man, who feigned to pass it back, but instead nipped down the bye-line beating two defenders and a little dink to the back post fooled everyone.

Kelly than went on a mazy run, beating four defenders but dragged his shot wide.

Morton's first decent chance came from a mistake from Clist.

The U's midfielder lost the ball in the opposition half, but a quick break forced Clarke into a superb finger-tip save from Allan Jenkins after a quick break.

Less than 60 seconds later, Clist was closed down again and Jim McAlister forced the United keeper into another save, this time low down.

Clarke then made his third good save when Masterton unleashed a 30-yard effort that Clarke saved well.

Green worked some space down the left and fired over the bar.

Turley replaced Clarke at half-time in United's only change, and it took them less than 30 seconds to break the deadlock.

Alfie Potter did well down the right, played in into Midson, who bought himself a few seconds and executed a delightful chip over replacement keeper Colin Stewart, whose first touch of the ball was picking it out of his net.

A long ball forward by Foster saw Green outpace the home defence, and his shot was saved by the feet of Stewart.

From the resulting corner, Kelly's flag kick was headed against the post by Creighton.

Boss Chris Wilder made four changes on the hour mark, and one of the replacements, Sam Deering took just six minutes to make his mark.

Latching onto the ball in the area, Deering's first shot was saved by Stewart, but the ball came back to the youngster.

He rounded the keeper, saw another shot blocked on the line by Carlo Monti, but third time lucky found the net, albeit with a hint of handball when the ball rebounded to him.

United wrapped it up in the final minute with Constable's strike.

Adam Murray played in Deering down the right, and he burst clear before crossing for Constable to tap in from close range.
