Police broke up an illegal rave just hours after promising a "robust" approach to unlicensed events.

Around 50 party-goers descended on Shilton airfield, near Carterton, on Friday, a spokesman said today.

Officers arrived at about 9.20pm and organisers were forced to pack up sound equipment and clear the area.

No one was arrested and the site, which is owned by Cotswold Wildlife Park, was emptied by 11pm.

Earlier in the day Insp Andy Higgs had urged people to contact police if they spotted a rave.

He added illegal raves cause disruption to residents, damage to property and potential safety problems for revellers.
