OWNERS of an exclusive club frequented by the rich and famous will be urged to take a stronger stance with members over speeding on the surrounding country roads.

The council request comes after Soho Farmhouse – attended by stars including Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne and model Poppy Delevigne – submitted plans to the district council to build 10 new 'pods' on its site in Great Tew, which will house an extra 40 guest bedrooms.

A related application has also been submitted for 15 additional guest rooms and a new walled garden.

Residents have raised fears the expansion will see 1,000 cars using the site on Saturdays – with the potential to result in tragedy if something is not done.

Nicola Shale, of Over Worton, believed the expansion could increase traffic levels to 1,000 cars on a Saturday and lead to a serious crash.

She said: "Cars whizz past our house, day and night with no regard to traffic or horses. A fatality will no doubt occur unless the council are able to enforce traffic calming and a different route in for 1,000 cars a day."

Soho Farmhouse, an offshoot of London club Soho House, is an exclusive members’ club and hotel located on a 100-acre site in Great Tew.

Two applications to West Oxfordshire District Council seek planning permission expand on the number of guests the club can cater for, but residents and members of Great Tew Parish Meeting have raised a number of concerns, mainly relating to an anticipated surge in traffic created by the expansion.

Chairman of the meeting John Mitchinson said councillors voted narrowly to support the application, but would be writing to Soho Farmhouse with a number of recommendations, including asking them to be stricter on speeding guests.

He said: "We will ask that the farmhouse management explore ways of raising awareness among membership of the dangers posed by speeding along the access road.

"There was a general agreement that the club could and should do more to penalise members who speed – including a clear statement in the new members' pack and suspension and/or cancellation of membership for persistent offenders."

The site currently includes 31 cabin buildings, a four-bedroom cottage and a seven-bedroom farm house.

Joanna Clarke, of nearby Nether Worton, said the expansion had the potential to push traffic to its limit.

She said: "The traffic on local roads has already increased greatly because of Soho Farmhouse. With this addition it will reach dangerous levels.

"The route proposed via Somerton, North Aston, Duns Tew and Ledwell is a narrow country lane in poor condition and thus entirely unsuitable for the volume of traffic estimated by this proposal.

"There has already been a number of accidents since the opening of Soho Farmhouse on this route."

A spokesman from Soho House said they had been speaking with residents about the plans and had a 'great response' from most of the community.

They added: "Everything built will blend into the countryside and the farm has revitalised the local economy bringing jobs, especially for young people, and trade.

"We're listening to concerns on traffic and the quality of the surrounding roads, and will be investing in managing and improving both. Working in partnership with the community is really important to us."

Soho Farmhouse, which boasts dozens of rustic log cabins for its guests, offers a wide range of activities including tennis and surfboard yoga.

It is understood that David Beckham and his family have purchased a £5m barn conversion just down the road from the farmhouse.

Councillors on the Uplands planning committee will visit the site before making a decision on the expansion plans.
