DOUBLE medal winning Olympian Liam Heath marked his first wedding anniversary by returning to the Oxfordshire church where he wed - but this time with a bit more gold than just his wedding ring.

Mr Heath and his wife Em visited St Kenelm's Church at Minster Lovell, near Witney, on Sunday to mark their special day and bought with them his two Rio de Janeiro Olympic medals.

The champion won gold in the Rio individual 200m kayak sprint and silver in the kayak double 200m event with Jon Schofield.

Revd Paula Clifford said: "I met the couple a year ago when I wed them and we have since kept in touch.

"After Liam won his medals in Rio I sent a message of congratulations and asked if there was any chance they would come down and show us the medals.

"We were having an informal concert at the church so nobody knew they were coming, but I thought it would be nice for their first anniversary.

"They were greeted with tremendous enthusiasm by members of the local congregation and visitors, it was brilliant.

"It was great to see them both and the medals were so heavy especially the gold which weighs half a kilo."

The pair from Maidenhead celebrated their first anniversary just one week after the close of the Rio Olympic games.
