A SIXTEENTH-CENTURY inn in Burford was crowned best pub in the Cotswolds by customers.

The Angel, in Witney Street, won the title as part of the Costwolds Awards, created to promote businesses, hotels, restaurants, spas and shops in the area. More than 300 businesses were nominated in 71 categories.

Landlord Terence King, 48, and landlady Gemma Finch, 34, who have been partners for six years, took over The Angel in 2011. They have since had a son, Freddie, now two years old.

Head chef Mike Burkert spent four years at The Hollybush in Witney before joining The Angel on December 31, 2014.

Ms Finch said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this award, which means all the more having been voted for exclusively by the public.

“We are very proud of our team, who work hard to make sure everyone visiting The Angel enjoys excellent food and drink, friendly service and a warm, cosy ambience.”

The pub recently underwent a £20,000 refurbishment.
