SPARKS rained across the skies of Witney and the smells of tasty treats filled the air as revellers enjoyed the town’s fireworks display.

Witney Rugby Football Club hosted the spectacular show, lighting up the playing fields and entertaining the crowds.

The woolly hat and welly-clad crowd whooped and cheered their way through the biggest firework display the club had put on.

Watching the fireworks and bonfire were brother and sister Antonio, three, and Maria Cavaliere, five.

Antonio said: “I liked the bright colours of the fireworks and had a really good time.”

Their dad, Fil Cavaliere said: “We have been before and we loved it. There is always a good atmosphere with the bonfire and fireworks.

“There was a bit of rain but it did not seem to dampen spirits. “We thoroughly enjoyed it – it was great for the kids and a good time was had by all.”

The annual display drew in the crowds in their thousands to enjoy a whole host of family entertainment, food stalls and the funfair.

Tim Iredale, who went along with his family, said: “It was a great display and was my daughter’s first fireworks. She really enjoyed it and so did my son Noah.”

Organisers said that more than 550 burgers were sold on the night as a number of barbecues and hog roasts treated the senses.

Youngsters Rachel Templey, 11, and Maya Banfield, six, had fun with sparklers at the event.

Mum to Rachel, Emma Kahl said: “We had not been to these fireworks before and we were really impressed. The girls really enjoyed the fireworks as well as the burgers afterwards.”

Rugby club steward Dave Wicks said: “It was a fantastic night. We had more cars than ever before and we had a really good attendance. The fireworks were also the biggest we have ever had and it was the most we have ever spent.

“There were fantastic reports from all round the nearby villages that they actually saw the fireworks too.

“We are just counting up the donation buckets now – even in spite of the weather people really supported the fireworks.”
