THREE people escaped a house fire in Witney after being woken by the sound of flames this morning.

Four fire crews were called to tackle a blaze that started in a electrical extractor fan.

The fire started in a bathroom, but then spread to the roof the house, in the Woodgreen area of Witney.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said the three people in the house at the time had managed to get out safely.

Firefighters extinguished the flames that had damaged about a quarter of the roof.

Incident commander JP Williams said: "The fire started in an extractor fan in the bathroom and the noise of the fire and the electrical arching awoke the occupants, who quickly left the building and called the fire service."

Mr Williams added that dust in extractor fans can build up and can cause a fire hazard and that owners should check and clean extractor fans regularly.
