Editor’s note: in 2022 the Teaching Regulation Agency lifted the classroom ban, finding that Mr Young was “genuinely remorseful” for his conduct and was now suitable to carry out teaching work.

A TEACHER has been banned from the classroom for at least five years after being found guilty of “unacceptable professional conduct” by a disciplinary panel.

Simon Young, 49, was the head of music at Bartholomew School in Eynsham and  was found to have failed to comply to a number of teaching regulations in 2012 and 2013.

His actions were found to have cost 10 students a grade in music GCSEs, according to The National College of Teaching (NCTL).

The NCTL said Mr Young failed to comply with exam body Edexel’s regulations regarding teaching and assessment of GCSE music controlled assessments, “dishonestly” did not keep records of student progress and did not support students in arranging catch up sessions.

The NCTL added that as a result ten students were removed from GSCE Music exams and not given the chance to get a grade.

The panel felt Mr Young had not shown “any insight into the seriousness of his conduct” and on behalf of the Education Secretary NCTL Paul Heathcote imposed the ban.

Mr Young can appeal to the High Court against the decision and after the five years apply to have the order removed.
