A BUTCHER from a Carterton supermarket is a finalist in a national in-house competition.

Seb Morris was nominated for the butcher category of Morrisons’ Mastercraft contest, which aims to identify the best person in eight trades working at more than 500 stores across the country.

He will be tested on product identification, specification, presentation, creation and ingenuity alongside five other finalists at Morrisons’ Yorkshire headquarters on Thursday.

Mr Morris, who works at the chain’s Black Bourton Road store, said: “I’m so proud to have been shortlisted.

“Not many people realise that meat on the butcher’s counter is prepared by myself and the team, and that we are fully-qualified butchers, so it’s great to achieve some recognition for this.”

Morrisons head of craft skills Mickey Greenhalgh said: “We’re proud of the traditional skills on show in our stores and we like to reward those specialists that really stand out. We have more skilled craftsmen and women on our counters than any other supermarket and Seb is a credit to his trade – we wish him the best of luck for the final.”

Other trades involved in the competition are bakers, fishmongers, wine advisors, florists, cake shop workers and produce specialists.
