A CAT was rescued from a house fire, caused by a faulty kitchen applicance, yesterday.

But the fire service has praised the homeowners for protecting their house by closing the kitchen door.

The fire happened at a house in Burford Road, Witney, at about 4.30pm on Sunday.

A neighbour heard the smoke alarm, went to check on the house and saw flames through the kitchen window.

Firefighters from Witney and Oxford sped to the scene, and, wearing breathing apparatus, rescued the cat from the kitchen then extinguished the fire.

The fire service said the blaze was started by a faulty kitchen appliance.

The occupiers were not at home at the time, and other rooms in the house were protected because the kitchen door was closed.

Crew manager Chris Hollis from Witney Fire Station said: “This incident clearly highlights the benefit of the fire safety precautions recommended by Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

“The neighbour was alerted to the fire by a working smoke alarm and the house was protected from greater smoke damage by a closed door.

“However, as this fire was caused by a faulty electrical appliance, it could have been prevented by simply switching it off at the wall.”
