A PUBLIC poll will be held in Woodstock after plans were unveiled to build up to 1,500 homes east of the town.

Residents will be asked “Do you oppose any development or urbanisation on green fields abutting and surrounding our town of Woodstock?”

It follows a public consultation launched this month by Pye Homes and West Waddy ADP to develop land between the A44 Oxford Road and Shipton Road, next to Oxford Airport.

Almost 200 people attended a public meeting at Woodstock Community Centre on Wednesday, October 8, and 11 people requested an official vote.

West Oxfordshire District Council has now published an official notice of the town poll, to take place on Thursday, November 6.

Woodstock town councillor Peter Jay said: “We hope it will demonstrate the overwhelming local opposition to the development on the east side of our town, which would double in size and threaten its character, the environment and the community.

“We will use the results as part of the campaign to fight the proposals.”

Laws which allow town polls to be held are different to those governing council and parliamentary elections so there will be no postal or proxy voting and no official poll cards will be printed.

  • A by-election will be held on Thursday, November 20, to fill a vacancy on Woodstock Town Council after Victoria Edwards, a former deputy mayor, resigned last month.
