MORE than 5,000 people descended on the Standlake Arena, near Witney, for a bit of banger racing.

The annual Heavy Metal Classic is the club’s biggest event of the year and included 25 races with 180 drivers taking part on Sunday.

Driver Jason Kew, 26, from Bampton, said: “I’ve been racing for 16 years.

“Normally now I race with national hot rods, all over the country, but I always attend this event.

“There is a buzz when you drive it on to the track with all the spectators.”

Terry Barber, 38, from Witney, has been racing alongside his brother Dean Barber, 40, for 20 years. He said: “My dad used to do it, me and my brother have always done it and even my son who is 13 is getting involved in it. There is a thrill of getting in a car and smashing it up.”
