MORE than 200 people from eight different churches came together to celebrate an ancient Christian tradition.

The group took part in the Palm Sunday Procession in Wantage but for the first time churches in Grove were involved too.

This comes after the Wantage and Grove Church Partnership was formed last year.

The annual procession marked the start of Holy Week in the lead up to Easter.

It moved from Holy Trinity Church Charlton to the Parish Church of SS Peter and Paul in Wantage.

Father-of-six Howard Hill, 57, a member of Wantage Community Church, said: “It’s a tradition up and down the land.”

He said it made sense for the churches to work together as they shared many views and were located so near to each other.

He added: “It is a good visible sign of church unity.

“The churches have differences but the things they have in common are the things that are celebrated.”

The procession also featured Pollyanne the donkey from the Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary in Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, with music provided by the Wantage Silver Band.
