A WANTAGE care home has been found to be failing residents on nine ‘essential standards’.

St Katharine’s House in Ormond Road has been ordered to improve following a recent review by Care Quality Commission inspectors.

The 76-bed home, run by Gold Care Homes, describes itself as a ‘well-equipped care home for elderly ladies’ with an ‘active Christian community’.

Oxfordshire County Council pays the home to provide care for 24 residents.

But inspectors found failings in its respect for residents, food and drink, the cleanliness of the home and the way staff administered medicines.

It also found failings in the activities provided and demanded staff training improvements.

The home has been given 14 days to come up with an action plan for improvement. Gold Care Homes said it had already acted to improve.

A spokesman said: “An action plan has been put in place to bring the home back to an excellent standard.

“This has been sent to the CQC and will be completed within eight weeks.

“The resources have been placed in the home and we’re confident that the residents are receiving a good quality of care and are at no risk whatsoever.”

An Oxfordshire County Council spokesman added: “Council officers have made visits to St Katharine’s House in Wantage recently and have made a number of recommendations based on these visits about how services there could be improved.

“The council will continue to work with the management of the independently-run care home and the regulator, the CQC, to address issues that have been raised.”
