Wantage youth club to meet over breath test plans

A Wantage youth club which last month unveiled plans to breathalyse children will hold a public meeting to decide its future.

Tonight’s meeting will discuss how Sweatbox, held in King Alfred’s Community and Sports College, Springfield Road, will move forward after the county council said the breath tests were against its youth policy.

Louise Chapman, county council cabinet member for children, young people and families, will chair the meeting in the main hall of the school’s east site at 6.30pm.

The centre will continue to run a drop-in centre on a Friday evening at a time to be agreed.

how odd that a set-up called "sweat" box should be so concerned about halitosis. Can someone not tell the good burgers of Wantage that there's nothing macho about body odour?

I find it wholly wrong that when somebody wants to do something positive and step forward to stop teenagers attending a youth club in Wantage drunk and out of control the council do gooders stop such a positive idea. I for one fully endorse the plans to breathalyse the children, my daughter goes to Sweatbox so it would also improve her safety.

How would it improve her safety? If the drunk kids are inside then they can be supervised. If they are outside then they will be free to do what they want, including attacking others leaving, maybe it will have the reverse effect.

Not if they are outside (I mean in the area, not by the door)as they are out of jurisdiction, and as they will not be breathalised who knows if they are drunk or not. And if the parents are in the pub, and don't answer the phone What then? 20 kids in the cells. Good idea, but like most of them, the practice is more problematic.

Does this mean that a breathalyzer has been made which will indicate cocaine, MDMA, skunk, crystal meth, heroin, etc etc? If not, what's the point?
