THE QUEEN has today awarded Grove-based Williams Advanced Engineering with a Queen’s Award.

The firm - part of the Formula 1 Williams group - was recognised for their battery technology, which has powered all Formula E racing cars since the fully electric series began in 2014.

Williams boast of a “99.8% reliability record in races from the company’s batteries”.

But the award, for enterprise in innovation, recognises the usefulness of the technology for commercial applications, notably in energy and power.

Craig Wilson, Managing Director of Williams Advanced Engineering, said: ”We are honoured to have been recognised by Her Majesty with this award for the industry-leading work of Williams Advanced Engineering in delivering a world-first that will light the way for future sustainable transport.

"I pay tribute to our team that has powered Formula E from the beginning at such a high level of innovation, performance, service and reliability."

Williams says the battery could power electric racing cars at 140mph and remain practical in terms of aerodynamics, range, recharging times and safety in research and commercial applications.

“Motorsport has traditionally been the test bed for new technologies, particularly in mobility and

automotive applications,” Mr Wilson added.

“This next generation of motorsport has already established itself as a technology innovator, with battery technology already feeding into many sectors and growing in importance.”

He said theirs was the first lithium ion battery to have passed the FIA’s crash testing regulations. It also met stringent air safety regulations.
