CCTV images of a man taken hours before he died in a fire at a public toilet have been released.

Jonathan Martin Mills, 49, from Oxford, died last week following the blaze in Southampton Street, Faringdon.

A post mortem examination was carried out the following day but proved inconclusive.

The images show Mr Mills at Pear Tree services just after 7am on Monday, February 9 -– about six hours before his death at the toilet block.

Mr Mills can be seen wearing a light green and grey jacket, dark trousers and light grey trainers.

Police are appealing for anyone who might have seen Mr Mills, of Netherwoods Road in Risinghurst, last Monday to come forward.

Several members of the public noticed smoke coming from the toilet block at about 1.45pm, and tried to kick down a locked cubicle door to free him before calling 999.

Thames Valley Police would also like to speak to anyone who used the public toilets in Southampton Street between 1pm and 1.45pm.

Officers were at the scene yesterday doing a check a week on and members of the public were invited to approach them with information.

Det Chief Insp Kevin Brown appealed last week for anyone who saw a man matching Mr Mills’ description in the vicinity of Southampton Street to call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

After the incident Faringdon town councillor Alex Meredith said: “This is clearly a tragic incident. The town has been deeply shocked.

“All our thoughts are with the victim’s family.”
