A MOTHER-OF-TWO is campaigning online for a crossing on the road where a six-year-old boy died in a collision in February.

Jayden Nash died at the John Radcliffe Hospital on February 15 – 10 days after the incident on Faringdon Road in Watchfield.

Claire Davison has set up the petition, Lights to Save Lives, asking for traffic lights to be installed at the Northford Hill section of Faringdon Road, to ensure the safety of parents and children at nearby Watchfield Primary School.

The petition was set up on December 15 and has since attracted more than 300 signatures in favour of the crossing.

In August an inquest heard Jayden, of Marlborough Close, Faringdon, had just got off the bus ahead of his mother Jordan Johnson before he went out into the road and was hit by an Audi at about 8.20am on Wednesday, February 5.

Mrs Davison, 37, whose son went to school with Jayden, said: “We have lived here for three-and-a-half years and long before that people had been campaigning for the crossing but have given up. I refuse to give up.

“I have two children and every day the school run is just like playing chicken.

“The kids want to cycle and run to school but we often have to take the car just because we don’t want to risk it.

“It should really be a 30mph limit, not a 40mph limit.

“It normally takes an accident to make them do something but someone has actually died.”

Mrs Davison’s call for the crossing is backed by a joint application made by Watchfield and Shrivenham parish councils.

Oxfordshire County Council leader Ian Hudspeth declined to comment without knowing further details of the individual case.

But Oxfordshire county councillor for Shrivenham, Yvonne Constance, said: “I have supported an application for a crossing from both Watchfield Parish Council and Shrivenham Parish Council.

“I do accept the county council does not have money for these things but that is not a reason for not doing it. The site there has attracted a lot of attention and we will be looking at how to fund a crossing.”

County council spokesman Paul Smith said: “We have seen that a petition is being drawn up and we will consider our response in due course.”
