A PLAN to demolish a town centre garage in Wantage and build flats has been opposed by councillors, who claim the homes are of a “poor design.”

R&H Shepherd has applied to knock down Motorlux garage in Newbury Street, and build 14 homes on the site.

The mini-estate would have eight two-bedroom homes, five two-bedroom flats and a one-bedroom maisonette.

But Wantage Town Council said the site was an “overdevelopment” for the town centre.

The planning committee said: “The buildings are too high and should be no higher than those in [neighbouring] St Anne’s Mews.

“The buildings are of poor design and not in keeping with the local vernacular.”

The council also said the 14 car parking spaces and the garden space the developer had planned in was inadequate for the size of the site.

R&H Shepherd’s architect, BHP Harwood, said in its application: “We have been advised that it will be necessary to provide information that supports the case for the loss of the business use on the site. A consultant’s report has been commissioned and will be provided.”

Planning authority Vale of White Horse District Council has said it will make a final decision by February 2.
