A 21-YEAR-OLD man is on police bail after an 11-week-old baby from Faringdon died last night.

Police are treating the boy's death as suspicious but are currently saying the investigation is being listed as a sudden unexplained death of an infant because they are keeping an open mind.

Police officers were called to the boy's home in Faringdon just before 3am on Monday.

Spokeswoman Francine Rodrigues said the force had been told the baby - who has not been publicly named yet - had collapsed at 6pm on Sunday.

The boy was taken to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon and then later transferred to the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.

"He sadly died of his injuries at 10.30pm last night," Ms Rodrigues said.

A post mortem examination to try to determine what caused his death will be held tomorrow.

The 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm prior to the baby's death. Police are not confirming what relationship he had with the child.

Detectives from the force's major crime unit are handling the case and Detective Chief Inspector Kevin Brown said: “Thames Valley Police is treating the death as suspicious at this stage and an intensive investigation has been launched.

"However, I would like to stress that this is a very complex case and we are keeping an open mind as to the cause at this moment.

“A scene watch has been in place since the report was made to Thames Valley Police. The scene watch is likely to remain in place until Friday afternoon.

“The force’s specially trained family liaison officers are currently with the family at this extremely distressing time.”
