RESIDENTS will be asked what traffic calming measures they would like on Ickleton Road in Wantage.

Householders in the area like John Hudson, 79, have complained about speeding cars, a worn-out road surface and overhanging trees.

Wantage Town Council will run a public consultation in the coming months about the idea of putting in a new road surface to slow traffic down.

County councillor Jenny Hannaby asked highways officers what improvements could be made and was told the road would be resurfaced by county engineers in 2016.

She said: “I am disappointed it is so long away. The road will be allowed to deteriorate in the next two years.

“In the meantime people will continue using it as a back route while the A417 to Faringdon is shut.

“So the town council is being pro-active – we are going to fight this one.”

Mrs Hannaby said she would be happy to use money from her county councillor’s ward fund to pay for speed humps on the road. But she added: “I have been told I would have to get permission.

“I would do that if it was agreed by residents that was the right thing to do.”
